Spain is divided into several regions and Catalonia is one of them. The city of Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia with a population of 1.6 million people, this city is the base of Barcelona FC.
Hans Gamper, later named Joan, a young man from Switzerland travelled to Barcelona for few days, but he liked so much the city that he decided to stay. He was also very passionate about football and in 1899 he placed an ad in a local sport magazine asking if there were any men in the city interested in establishing a football club. Eleven people turned up and they became the founding members of Futbol Club Barcelona.
Blue and garnet have been Barcelona’s colors from the very beginning, that’s why the nickname Blaugrana was given. There are many theories behind these two colors, the first one is that Joan Gamper had brought these colors with him from Switzerland where his football team was supposed to have played in them. Another theory is that Gamper as an accountant used some pencils by this color. A third popular theory is that Arthur Witty has worn these colos when he played for Crosby’s Merchant Taylor’s School back in Liverpool.
The first years were tough for Barcelona, until Gamper took over the accounting books as well as scoring, to be presice he scored more than 100 goals in just 48 matches! Barcelona till 1910 had won many trophies, mostly regional, in that year won Copa del Rey for the first time. It was around that time that the club took up Catalan instead of Castilian as its official language. From this point forward the club gradually became a symbol of Catalan identity. The club faced again many difficulties from 1939 till 1944, a period in which Spain was ravaged by civil war that ended with the dictator Francisco Franco seizing power. Franco was opposed to expressions of Catalan self-governance and was therefore against Barcelona. This when the legend was born, Barcelona was more than a club – mes que un club.
