The History of the Portuguese Liga NOS (1934- 2017)

The Primeira Liga or Liga NOS was founded in 1934 as an experimental league and in 1938 as an official league. Liga NOS is the highest professional football league in Portugal. The league consists of 18 teams and 486 players, from which 272 of them are foreign players (56%) and the average age is 26.3 years. The league is ranked by UEFA in the 7th position with 49.332 points and the total market value rise to 864,35 million euros.

Benfica has won the most championships (36), followed by Porto with 27 titles and Sporting CP with 18.

The most successful goal scorer of the league is Fernando Peyroteo with 331 goals, followed by Benfica’s legend Eusebio with 319 goals, Fernando Gomes with 318 goals and Oscar Cardozo with 111. The top 3 record players is Alan at the top of the list with 330 matches, second is Luisao with 317 matches, third is Rui Patricio with 292 matches. The most successful coaches are Jorge Jesus, Jesualdo Ferreira and Manuel Machado.

The biggest victory ever recorded was Benfica 8:0 Famalicao (March 13, 1994) and the game with most goals was Benfica 8:1 Vitoria Setubal (August 31, 2009).

The biggest stadium is Estadio da Luz (Benfica) with 65. 647 seats and second biggest is Estadio do Dragao (Porto) with 50.399 seats. The match with the highest number of spectators was Benfica 2:0 Braga counting 65.647spectators (March 14, 2015). On the other hand the match with the lowest attendance was Estrela Amadora 0:2 Pacos Ferreira reaching 222 spectators (April 17, 2009).

Lastly, the number one record transfer was James Rodrigues from Porto to Monaco with 45 million euros, the second most expensive was Ederson from Benfica to Manchester City, Joao Mario from Sporting to Inter, Hulk from Porto to Zenit, Axel Witsel from Benfica to Zenit again and Falcao from Porto to Atletico Madrid, all these players with the same amount, 40 million euros.
